PCG gears up for ‘Oplan Undas Ligtas Biyahe’ in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Iloilo is all set for “Oplan Undas Ligtas Biyahe” to ensure security in all ports and ferry terminals in connection with the upcoming All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days on November 1 and 2, respectively.

In an interview on Tuesday, PCG-Iloilo commander Lt. Ramil Palabrica said they would be on “full alert” status starting October 28 until November 5 to secure the safety of passengers.

Palabrica said Passengers Assistance Desks in all ports here would be established to assist passengers, as well as accommodate their complaints and concerns.

These desks will be manned jointly by teams from PCG, Philippine National Police (PNP), Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), and the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA).

Palabrica said a pre-departure inspection of the baggages would be strictly implemented to see to it that passengers were not carrying harmful objects such as deadly weapons and firearms, and also to avoid overloading.

Some K9 dogs will also be deployed in ports to help in the inspection, especially to detect explosives and illegal drugs.

Boats will also be inspected to ensure that they comply with safety requirements like the provision of life jackets to all passengers and if their engines are functioning well.

“We will not sign their departure clearance if they do not comply with the regulations,” he stressed.

Palabrica assured that coast guard personnel are on standby to respond to any untoward incidents.

He said there are passengers starting October 28.

Passengers are advised to book their tickets early to secure seats and avoid long lines. (PNA)
