PH beats Cambodia in table tennis

KUALA LUMPUR — The Philippines scored a 3-0 victory over Cambodia on Sunday in the men’s team Class 4 of the 9th ASEAN Para Games table tennis tournament at Hall 7 of the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibit Center (MITEC) in Jalan Duta.

Billy Smith Cartera defeated Yoiy Kosal, 11-6, 11-3, 11-5 in the first singles while Darwin Salvacion prevailed over Ek Nhansamoth, 11-4, 11-5, 11-4 in the second singles.

Cartera and Salvacion wrapped up the match after beating Kosal and Nhansamoth, 11-8, 11-1, 11-6, in the doubles.

Earlier, the Filipinos bowed to their Indonesian opponents in the men’s team Class 8 and Class 9, respectively.

Rogelio Cezar and Jobert Lumanta fell to Banyu Tri Mulyo, 0-3, in the Class 9 competition while Pablo Catalan and Benedicto Gaela also surrendered to their rivals in Class 9 with the same score.

Competition in the men’s team continues on Monday, with Cezar and Lumanta going up against their Vietnamese rivals at 9 a.m. They are also scheduled to face the Thais at 2 p.m.

Cartera and Salvacion, on the other hand, are scheduled to meet their Vietnamese opponents at 4 p.m. while Catalan and Gaela will be against host Malaysia at 2 p.m.

Also seeing action on Monday are Paralympian Josephine Medina and Minnie Cadag in the women’s team Class 9-10. They won the bronze medal in the 2015 edition of the ASEAN Para Games in Singapore.

Aside from the team bronze, Medina and Cadag won the silver medal in the doubles event.
