The number of cybercrime cases in the country saw a significant decline in the first six months of 2024, dropping by 36.16% compared to the same period last year.
According to the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), a total of 8,177 cases were reported from January to June 2024, from 12,808 incidents during the first half of 2023.
Among the most prevalent crimes, online selling scams dropped from 3,468 to 1,613 cases. Investment scams also decreased from 1,001 to 650 cases, while debit/credit card fraud went down from 736 to 528 cases.
The PNP-ACG attributed the decrease in cybercrime complaints to the directive of PNP Chief, PGen. Rommel Francisco Marbil, of enhancing the ACG personnel’s capabilities to combat cybercrime cases.
“Likewise, the collaboration of PNP-ACG with stakeholders, local and foreign counterparts, internet intermediaries, and various law enforcement agencies, has played a crucial role in the enhancement of the security measures and bolstered cybercrime investigations,” ACG acting director PBGen. Ronnie Francis Cariaga said.
“We are steadfast in our commitment to apprehending these cybercriminals and ensuring a safer environment for everyone,” he added.
However, the ACG noted that the number of cyber-libel cases went up due increased online engagement and sharing of content.
According to PNP Spokesperson PCol. Jean Fajardo, the police force continues to train its personnel to ramp up its cybersecurity management. – iro
