PNP drive nets 3,000 ‘tambays’

MANILA — Nearly 3,000 drifters have been arrested by Philippine National Police (PNP) during the implementation of the city and municipal ordinances against public consumption of alcohol, smoking and indecency.

“The PNP will implement the instructions of President Rodrigo Duterte to strictly enforce local ordinances and laws against tambays,” PNP chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said Monday.

The laws are in line with the provisions of the Local Government Code enabling local government units to enforce general welfare laws.

Albayalde said the PNP National Capital Regional Police Office (NCRPO) arrested 2,981 personalities in various parts of Metro Manila for specific violations of local laws akin to vagrancy from June 13 to 18.

Of the number, 944 were arrested for loitering aimlessly during cities and municipalities’ curfew hours, 653 were apprehended for drinking in public places and streets, 651 for being half-naked in public, 546 for smoking in public and 187 for traffic code violations.

Albayalde said those who feel they were unfairly targeted by apprehending policemen may opt to file the appropriate complaint before the PNP headquarters. (Benjamin Pulta/PNA)
