Police manhunt for Daraga mayor continues

LEGAZPI CITY — The Albay Provincial Police Office continues its search for Daraga Mayor Carlwyn Baldo after police operatives on Monday failed to serve him two warrants of arrest for double murder and six counts of attempted murder due to his absence.

Col. Wilson Asueta, Albay police director, said in a phone interview on Tuesday that the manhunt is being conducted province-wide and will continue until the mayor is arrested or voluntarily surrenders.

It was reported on Monday that the fugitive mayor’s camp would send surrender feelers but Asueta said, “Negative pa, wala pa akong natatanggap sa sinasabing pagsuko (Negative, I haven’t received any information about such surrender feeler).”

Aside from murder and attempted murder charges, the mayor is also facing criminal complaints of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The police has tagged Baldo as the mastermind in the killing of Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Rodel Batocabe and his police escort during a Christmas gift-giving event in Barangay Burgos, Daraga town on Dec. 22, 2018.

The lawmaker was then contesting the reelection bid of Baldo.
Batocabe’s widow, Gertrudes, took over her husband’s bid for the mayoral post.
