Public told to follow food safety rules after South Cotabato town incident

The Department of Health (DOH) advised the public to “follow safety protocols” in food preparation following the reported hospitalization of over 100 individuals in Lake Sebu after eating food from a campaign rally. 

The DOH said the incident is being thoroughly investigated, while coordination between local health officers through the Center for Health Development Soccsksargen is ongoing to attend to the patients.

“DOH advises the public and event organizers that it is the summer season. Food gets easily spoiled because of the hot weather. Always inspect any food or beverage that will be served, to ensure safety,” the DOH said.

Among the safe food preparation guidelines include wearing of food-grade gloves, hair net, mouth covers; hand and utensil washing or sterilization; use of fresh produce; and doing away with the mixing of cooked and uncooked products. 

The DOH also advised storing food in cool and dry places or away from direct sunlight, as well as the refrigeration of food until consumption.

Individuals experiencing stomach pains, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever after meal consumption are told to head to the health facility or hospital closest to them. AG-gb
