After having been found compliant with all the requirements of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the Quezon City University (QCU), a local government led institution, has been given recognition and is now a full-fledged Higher Education Institution.
The certificate of recognition was awarded by CHED Chairperson J. Prospero de Vera and UniFAST Executive Director Atty. Ryan Estevez to the Quezon City University represented by Mayor Joy Belmonte.
“This CHED recognition is a testament to the quality of education that we provide in QCU. For years, we have continuously strived to provide improved higher education programs for our students that will prepare them as they join the workforce. We believe this achievement will open more opportunities for our QCians,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said.
QCU, formerly known as Quezon City Polytechnic was established on March 1, 1994 by virtue of the City Council Ordinance No. SP-171 which started as an institution offering technical and vocational courses. It was renamed to Quezon City Polytechnic University (QCPU) after it reached the university status in 2001.
In 2019, the city council passed the ordinance SP-2812 converting QCPU to QCU to align with the RA 10931 also known as Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act which provided free higher education in State and Local Universities and Colleges. QCU now offers college degree courses such as BS Electronics Engineering, BS Entrepreneurship, BS Industrial Engineering, BS Information Technology, and BS Accountancy.
Dr. Theresita Atienza who was appointed QCU President on December 2020, leads the improvements in the three QCU campuses (San Bartolome, Batasan Hills, and San Francisco) including the approval of this CHED recognition and the University’s eligibility under the UniFAST Free Higher Education Assistance.
With the institutional recognition, full tuition fee and miscellaneous fees of more than 8000 qualified scholars will be covered by CHED’s UniFAST program.
“We will continue to expand our program offerings and ensure that our graduates will be knowledgeable and equipped as they graduate from the university. We are inspired even more to strive to be the #1 local university of employable graduates,” Dr. Atienza said.
QCU students can also avail of various CHED scholarships and financial assistance like Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES), Student Loan Program (SLP) and Tulong Dunong Program.
