Research competition among schools seeks national development

Establishing an annual research competition among universities and colleges to improve national development has been approved by House committee on higher and technical education  on Monday, led by 2nd District of Zamboanga Sibugay Rep. Ann Hofer.

House Bill 4254 titled “Research Competitive Act of 2016” mandates all schools and universities to organize an annual research competition among students.

The bill also provides holding the annual research competition among universities and colleges within a particular province or region, which will be participated by winners of school level research competition.

Winners of the provincial competition shall compete in the annual regional completion and winners in the annual regional competition shall compete in the national annual competition.

The rules and regulations of the Act will be articulated by The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The funds to fulfill the provisions of the Act, meanwhile, will be included in the General Appropriations Act of the year, following its enactment into law and thereafter.

The bill’s author, 1-Ang Edukasyon Partylist Rep. Salvador Belaro stated that in developed economies, the academe is a necessary partner of industry on research, and the output of the academe is beginning of development in business and private sector.

The Association of Local Colleges and Universities (ALCU) shows support to the bill.

“The development of manpower resources will really need a strong research culture and research arm that will help push the productivity level of our manpower resources in the country,” ALCU Executive Director Dr. Dalisay Brawner stated. (Angelica Bobiles – PTV)
