Rice supply not affected by ‘bukbok’: NFA

DAGUPAN CITY – The National Food Authority (NFA) in Western Pangasinan assured the public that the rice supply in the markets in the province are free from weevil, locally known as “bukbok”.

“Our rice supply was properly transported, and I can assure the public that it is not infested by ‘bukbok’,” said NFA Western Pangasinan Assistant Manager Chona Maramba in a phone interview Monday evening.

The warehouses were also thoroughly cleaned and prepared before the onset of rains and floods, she added.

Maramba said the office’s rice buffer stock would last until September, despite the high demand due to recent calamities in the province.

“We have 30,000 bags stored in our warehouses, and 40,000 more will be shipped from La Union,” she said.

Maramba added that the NFA Regional Office is ready to replenish their supply once it is exhausted, although the possibility of running out of rice is pretty low.

The NFA-Western Pangasinan supplies quality and inexpensive rice to 23 municipalities and three cities in the province. (Ahikam Pasion/PNA)
