San Roque dam floodgates closed

SAN MANUEL, Pangasinan —  After 18 days of nonstop water release, the San Roque dam’s floodgates were finally closed on Thursday.

National Power Corp. spokesperson Odette Rivero, in an interview, said the dam’s gates were closed at 8 a.m. since the water level has receded to 274.62 meters above sea level (masl).

“It is to ensure that there is enough space to accommodate any large inflows again and delay gate opening just in case,” Rivero said.

The dam’s floodgates were opened 2 a.m. on Aug. 12 after reaching the 280 masl critical level due to heavy monsoon rains and water inflow from the opened gates of Binga and Ambuklao dams in Benguet province.

The water level, however, continued to fluctuate despite continuous rains which affected Northern Luzon.

Rivero said the dam is currently on turbine discharge mode to generate power. (Ahikam Pasion/PNA)
