Secretary Locsin, Chinese State Councilor Meet at Sidelines of 52nd AMM

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr (left) and Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a bilateral meeting on 30 July 2019 at the sidelines of the 52nd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Post Ministerial Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.

Secretary Locsin and State Councilor Wang took positive note of the growing momentum of bilateral relations within the context of the two countries’ Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation. The two Ministers discussed developments and initiatives in the key areas of trade, investment, and tourism.

On infrastructure cooperation, Secretary Locsin welcomed the progress in projects under the Build Build Build program. Both sides committed to achieve similar progress in projects involving water resources management, irrigation, and railway transportation.

As Country Coordinator for ASEAN-China dialogue relations, the Philippines committed to work closely with ASEAN Member States and China on the various ongoing programs and initiatives. Secretary Locsin lauded the continued progress in the negotiations towards an effective and substantive Code of Conduct on the South China Sea. Secretary Locsin and State Councilor Wang also exchanged views on developments in the international and regional arena, as well as on matters of mutual interest and concern.

The meeting between the two Foreign Ministers, their third, complements the high-level exchanges between Philippine and Chinese officials, and lays the ground work for the meaningful observance of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China in 2020.
