Security up as Kidapawan marks foundation, fruit festival

KIDAPAWAN CITY – Police and military authorities here have started implementing stricter security measures as the city prepares to celebrate its 71st foundation anniversary and annual “Timpupo Festival” starting Wednesday.

Mayor Joseph Evangelista said the city government is doing its best to ensure the safety of all Kidapaweños and its visitors during the twin celebration from Aug. 8-19.

A highlight for both celebrations is the “Fruits Eat All You Can” on August 13 and 18 at the city plaza, where the public would be treated to free eating of locally-produced fruits.

Evangelista said personnel of the Army’s 90th Infantry Battalion are complimenting the Kidapawan City police office with a sizable security unit to ensure public safety during the celebration.

Police and soldiers, including police force multipliers, village watchmen and members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit have been deployed around the city, he said.

While security forces are stationed mainly in the city plaza where most of the activities are taking place, Evangelista also ordered stricter inspection of vehicles, bags and other items carried by anyone entering the city.

Following the bomb explosion in Basilan and the recent bombing attempts in nearby M’lang, North Cotabato, the local police force headed by Supt. Ramel Hojilla has been placed on heightened alert.

“Police will strictly enforce a no-smoking ordinance during the festival and foundation activities. Curfew hours will remain in effect,” the mayor reminded the residents and visitors alike.

Motorcycle drivers and back-riders are prohibited from wearing crash helmets while within the city proper for easy identification.

“Everybody’s safety is our priority,” Evangelista said. (Edwin Fernandez/PNA)
