Senate lauds Filipino sardines maker for winning award in Spain

MANILA — The Senate on Wednesday adopted a resolution commending Maunlad Canning Corp., the manufacturer of Young’s Town sardines, for bringing honor and pride to the country when it won the international Food and Beverage Quality award in Madrid, Spain.

Senate Resolution No. 296, which was authored by Senator Maria Lourdes “Nancy” Binay, noted that Maunlad Canning was the only Philippine company selected to receive this year’s international award.

The prestigious award, given by the international business group Global Trade Leaders’ Club, aims to recognize businesses worldwide for product excellence and contribution to their respective countries’ development.

The association has more than 7,500 members from 95 different countries and gathers yearly with the idea that their mutual knowledge and exchange of experiences would lead to new business opportunities.

In her sponsorship speech, Binay said Maunlad Canning deserves the recognition of the Senate as “a Filipino brand that stood the test of time because of its dedication to the quality and taste of its products and its devotion to its employees and its customers.”

“This remarkable performance of Maunlad Canning Corp.’s product Young’s Town sardines is an inspiration to Filipinos all over the world and deserves our commendation,” Binay said.

The resolution also noted that Young’s Town sardines has been the recipient of numerous awards, among them the 2005 National Product Quality Excellence Awards, 2012-2013 National Product Quality Excellence Awards, 2014 Best Choice Awards, 2015 Philippine Top Choice Awards for Excellence, 2016 International Food & Beverage Quality Award, and the 2017 International Food and Beverage Quality Award.

The company started in 1968 under the name of Earldon Enterprises, which was later changed to Lapaz Sales Center.

In 1988, Fishwealth Canning Corp. was formed and built its first factory in Malabon, producing Youngstown Sardines for the C and D markets.

To date, Maunlad Canning has four factories employing more than 2,000 people, with the fourth factory established in Zamboanga to supply the market demand in Mindanao. (Jose Cielito Reganit/PNA)
