Solon lauds building of new jail in Davao

DAVAO CITY — First District Representative Karlo Nograles lauded the construction of a new city jail here, saying it would decongest the existing facility in Maa in this city.

Nograles said the construction of the new city jail facility is a big help because of the increasing number of male and female inmates every year.

“This is a very important project. The city jail in Maa will remain, but this new complex will be a new city jail to divide the population of the inmates,” he said in an interview on Saturday.

The construction of the building and the perimeter fence of the eight-hectare area in Wangan, Calinan has started, following the groundbreaking last Friday with Nograles, Usec. Nestor Quinsay, head of the public safety division of the Department of the Interior Local Government (DILG), and Allan Borromeo, the regional director of the Department of Works and Highways (DPWH) in Region 11.

Nograles said some of the inmates will stay in Maa city jail.

“I think if the new city jail will be constructed and finish, the female inmates will be left at the Davao city jail. Also, those who have sickness and the elderly. Everybody else will be transferred,” he said.

Nograles said the government is also constructing a new building for the female section in the Maa prison to further decongest the jail, which has a population of about 3,000. (Rhoda Grace Saron/PNA)
