Solon pushes return of drug test for driver’s license application

House committee on transportation Chairperson Edgar Sarmiento has called for the restoration of mandatory drug testing as a requirement for driver’s license application to prevent road accidents caused by irresponsible drivers.

The drug test requirement in securing a license was abolished in 2013.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said the move to reinstate the measure will help ensure road safety and good phsical and mental condition of drivers, but will not help resolve traffic condition.

“We support that, para sa ganoon mapanatili nating ligtas ang lahat ng road users sa kalsada,” MMDA Traffic Chief Bong Nebrija said.

The House, under House Bill (HB) 3341, has also been pushing for the placement of CCTV cameras, and dash cams in PUVs and TNVS to aid in the investigation of road accidents. – Report from Daniel Manalastas
