Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Monday said that while the pandemic continues, it is not the habit of Filipinos to be indifferent in times like this.
“Like a patient in convalescence, the world needs to sit this situation out, but not the Filipino. Naniniwala ako na hindi ugali ng ating mamamayan ang mag walang-bahala sa mga panahong tulad nito,” Sotto said during the opening of the 18th Congress’ third regular session.
Sotto said he strongly believes that the Filipino people will overcome the current pandemic situation, further saying that the Senate has laid down several laws addressing the situation.
He also urged the public to cooperate with the Senate for the good of all.
“I ask for everyone’s help even though I would be the first to say that the task is overwhelming… The senate is ready and willing to be a partner of the other branches of government in correcting any wrong or discontinuing a measure that is counter productive,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sotto also said the Senate is willing to support all efforts to protect the community from the COVID-19 virus.
“First, the Senate supports all efforts to keep our population COVID-19 resistant. Sa abot ng makakaya, patuloy na maglalaan ang Senado ng pondo sa lahat ng programa ng gobyerno sa paglaban sa COVID-19,” Sotto said.
“Galing sa buwis ang mga pondo ito. Kung alinsunod sa ating oversight authority, [ipagpapatuloy ng] Senado ang layunin, proseso, at pamamaraan na paggamit ng mga pondong ito,” he added.
Sotto also said the Senate aims to assist industries and sectors that generate income.
“Second, the Senate aims to assist families, industries, or sectors that generate income. Kailangan nating bigyan ng patuloy na ayuda ang ating mga kababayan dahil sa kawalan ng trabaho ng marami sa atin.”
“Kailangan nating tulungan ang mga pangunahing industriya o sektor na nagsisilbing siklab sa pagdaloy ng pera sa ekonomiya. Mahalaga na buksan natin ang mga serbisyo na magdadala ng pangkabuhayang kita ng ating mga mamamayan,” he said.
Sotto said that amid changing times, Filipinos must “shed the old skin to grow new ones in order to survive, not only individually, but as a nation.”
No OFW left abandoned
Sotto also emphasized that the Senate will not abandon overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
“‘Wag natin kakalimutan ang ating mga bagong bayani. Sa kasalukuyan, pinag-uusapan sa Senado ang pagbalankas ng mga sistemang mas mabuting pangangalaga para sa mga overseas Filipino workers, pati na rin ang pagbibigay sa kanila ng karagdagang benepisyo,” he said.
“Alam natin na maraming taong binuhay ng kanilang pawis at dugo ang ekonomiya ng Pilipinas. At ngayong medyo lugmok ang kanilang kalagayan, hindi tama na sila ay pabayaan.”
The Senate President assured that the Senate will thoroughly review laws and other ways that will help create more jobs so that Filipinos won’t have to leave their families.
Commitment to disaster preparedness
Moreover, the Senate continues to commit to disaster preparedness and the protection of the environment.
“Dama na natin ang patuloy na pag-aalboroto ng kalikasan. Walang taong hindi nabibisita ng bagyo o baha, o nag-aalala sa pagsabog ng bulkan, o nababalisa sa biglang paglindol. Dahil hindi maiiwasan ang mga pangyayaring ito, kailangan nating paghandaan ang posibleng pagdating ng mga kalamidad,” Sotto said.
“Huling tatalakayin ng Senado ang usapin ng kahandaan laban sa salot o sakuna. At dahil ang sakuna ang dulot ng pagmamalabis sa kalikasan, kailangan suriin natin ang mga pamantayan ng pag-aalaga sa ating mga dagat at bundok,” he added. -rir
