Special voter registration to be held at Mandaluyong women’s jail

MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will conduct a special satellite registration for detainee voters in Mandaluyong City on Thursday, in connection with the May 13, 2019 National and Local Elections.

The poll body said the special offsite registration for detainees will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Correctional Institute for Women (CIW), which is under the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

Commissioner Ma. Rowena Amelia Guanzon, Commissioner-in-Charge for the Committee on Detainee Voting, said they would like to encourage more women to register and participate in the country’s electoral exercises.

“Efforts to register more women voters is part of the Commission’s aim to be more inclusive, which we try to achieve by reaching out to and giving preference to members of vulnerable sectors,” said Guanzon, who also heads the Gender and Development – Focal Point System (GAD-FPS) executive committee.

The CIW is the only penal institution in the country exclusive for women offenders.

The system of continuing registration of voters resumed last July 2 and will run until September 29.

Since the start of the nationwide registration, the poll body has received a total of 2,297,606 applications.

Applicants for new registration, transfer/transfer with reactivation, reactivation, change/correction of entry, and inclusion/reinstatement of records in the list of voters are accepted in all Offices of the Election Officer of the city/district/municipality, where the applicant resides, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday, including holidays.

Satellite registration activities are also being conducted nationwide in barangay halls, public/private schools, commercial establishments, detention center/jail or resettlement areas, areas with Indigenous Communities, and other public places to ensure wider voter participation. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
