The Bureau of Immigration (BI) apprehended a Taiwanese fugitive in Quezon City on Monday, Jan. 8.
The BI said in a statement released on Tuesday, Jan. 9, that 26-year old Yang Chia-Le was wanted in Taiwan for fraud.
Agents from the Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) arrested the man in a residential area along Nueva Vizcaya St., in Bago Bantay.
“Yang has been in the country since August 2022, with no subsequent application for extension of his visa, hence he is already an overstaying alien,” the Immigration bureau added.
Yang was allegedly a member of a telecom fraud syndicate from December 2020 to January 2021 that would pose as law enforcement agents to swindle Taiwanese victims.
The bureau added that Yang is said to be involved in at least two cases of fraud amounting to P2.3 million.
He was arrested after the BI received information from the government of Taiwan that he was tagged as a fugitive from justice.
The Taiwan Taipei District Prosecutors Office had already issued an arrest warrant in April of last year.
BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco revealed that fraudsters like Yang attempt to hide and transfer their operations in the country.
“We will not allow such things to happen, hence our tight cooperation with foreign governments who give us information about wanted fugitive remains. We will continue to hunt these fugitives down and deport them,” Tansingco added.
Yang will remain in the BI’s facility in Bicutan, Taguig and will be imprisoned for more than two years upon deportation.
It also said he will be added to the BI’s blacklist. – cf
