Teen electrocuted while hunting spider in Cavite

KAWIT, Cavite — Police are now investigating the case of a 16-year-old teen who died of electrocution while he and several friends were hunting spider at the backyard of a neighbor in Barangay Toclong in this town last Saturday.

In a report on Monday, PO2 Jason Bianes Murcia, case investigator, identified the victim as Edison Calsado Caratay, 16, of Block 18-Lot 17 Pinagkaloob 1, Barangay Toclong.

The victim’s mother, Elsie C. Caratay, reported the incident to the police past midnight on Sunday.

One Jaycer Ladesa Guballo, 37-year-old construction worker and resident of said barangay, is now under police custody for investigation.

Initial investigation showed that Edison and his friends — who are into spider fighting — were hunting for derby spiders at the backyard of Guballo’s house when Caratay accidentally stepped on a live wire.

Guballo admitted installing the live wire as deterrent against thieves from barging into his backyard where he has several game cocks.

The victim was rushed to Kawit Kalayaan Hospital and later transferred to Divine Grace Hospital in General Trias, Cavite but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The victim’s remains were brought to the Ernest Funeral Homes in Barangay Banalo in Bacoor City for autopsy/post mortem examination.
Guballo added that he switches on the live wire every night to prevent thieves from barging into his backyard and steal his fighting cocks.

The suspect, however, said he forgot to switch it off the following early morning which resulted in the electrocution of the victim. (Rogelio Limpin/PNA)
