TESDA receives JICA award for rehab efforts in Yolanda-hit Visayas

MANILA — The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has awarded the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for its efforts in the rehabilitation of “Yolanda”-hit areas in the Visayas.

TESDA received the JICA President Award for the Project on Rehabilitation and Recovery from Typhoon Yolanda.
In 2013, typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) hit the Visayas. TESDA participated in relief efforts and also helped in rebuilding structures that were destroyed by the typhoon.

TESDA has also provided trainings for Yolanda survivors. Data released by TESDA on Monday indicated that 11, 166 trainees got TESDA certificates, and that up to 17,000 of the survivors got an employment.

Based on the report issued by TESDA-Region Vlll, a total of 18,616 Yolanda survivors completed their training programs from the agency. Of these, 11,615 were assessed, 11,166 received certificates and up to 17,093 people were employed.

Meanwhile, TESDA said the award was given to JICA Overseas Offices’ outstanding partners that created positive results and impacts on their projects.

TESDA Information Officer Nina Dodd told the Philippine News Agency that among JICA’s assistance to the agency was the rehabilitation of two buildings in the Balangiga National Agricultural School in eastern Samar. These buildings were turned over to TESDA in February 2016.

JICA had also provided TESDA with training tools and equipment for food processing, welding, carpentry and plumbing, it added. (PNA)
