Tropical cyclone ‘Jolina’ weakens, nearly 2-K stranded in ports

Severe tropical storm “Jolina” (international name “Conson”) weakened from a typhoon into a severe tropical storm as it continued to traverse Masbate, the state weather bureau said on Tuesday (Sept. 7).

Based on the latest weather bulletin issued on Tuesday, the center of “Jolina” was estimated in the vicinity of Baleno, Masbate with a maximum sustained winds of 110 kph near the center, gustiness of up to 135 kph, and a central pressure of 994 hPa.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecasts that in the next 24 hours, there will be heavy to intense rains over Masbate, Leyte, Biliran, Samar, Northern Samar, Sorsogon, Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines provinces, Southern Quezon, Romblon, and Marinduque.

Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains are also expected over Mindoro Provinces and the rest of Calabarzon and Visayas.

PAGASA said that the storm may also traverse Central Luzon between Wednesday (Sept. 8) and Thursday (Sept. 9), roughly to the east and north of Metro Manila.

The Philippine Coast Guard Eastern Visayas District on Tuesday afternoon reported that about 1,946 passengers, drivers, and cargo helpers are stranded in some 18 ports in Eastern Visayas and Bicol regions.

In Eastern Visayas, 1,441 passengers, drivers, and helpers; 3 vessels; and 515 rolling cargoes are stranded.

Meanwhile, 505 passengers, drivers, and helpers; 14 vessels; and 167 rolling cargoes are stranded in Bicol. – Report from PTV News / CF – bny
