TWG created to study Baguio underground telecom, power lines

BAGUIO CITY — The city government’s resolve to have underground utility lines for a more stable delivery of services is gaining headway, a Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco) official said.

Beneco manager for Institutional Services Atty. Delmar Cariño said a technical working group (TWG) has been created by the city government to conduct a feasibility study on an underground system for telecommunications and electric power lines within areas in the central business district.

TWG members are personnel from the city engineering office, cable and telephone companies, Beneco and city planning office.

Cariño said they are glad that the city executives agreed to their proposal to bring the electric distribution system underground to address issues on disruption of service during typhoons and heavy rains.

According to him, the utility firm has the technical expertise to bring its power distribution lines underground but the major issue being faced is the cost that will be incurred in implementing the project, thus the proposal to the city government, which could provide the funds.

Last June 6, Mayor Mauricio Domogan issued Administrative Order No. 63-2017 creating the technical working group.

The order was issued upon a recommendation of the city council committee on public utilities for the creation of a technical working group to come up with a feasibility study.

Prior to this, Councilor Leandro Yangot filed his proposed ordinance seeking to address the danger posed by the tangled dangling wires and cables of public utility companies which have likewise become eyesores. (Liza Agoot/PNA)
