The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is ready to assist the Philippines following the onslaught of Typhoon Maring that has already claimed 11 lives and displaced more than a thousand people.

“UNICEF is closely monitoring the situation in areas affected by Typhoon Maring. We’re ready to provide humanitarian assistance when called upon by the government,” the UNICEF Philippines said in a tweet on Tuesday (Oct. 12).

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Tuesday reported that 11 persons died in Cagayan, Palawan, and Benguet as the typhoon battered parts of Luzon and brought rains over the Visayas.

Seven were also logged as missing while three were injured, the disaster monitoring agency said.

As of this posting, an estimated 19,147 people were affected in Cagayan, Mimaropa, Caraga, and Cordillera Administrative Region, while some 6,567 have been displaced by the typhoon.

Maring made landfall in the vicinity of Fuga Island in Cagayan on October 11.

It left the Philippine area of responsibility on Tuesday morning and accelerated while moving westward over the West Philippine Sea in the afternoon. (PNA) – jlo
