VCO found effective in lessening severe COVID-19 symptoms

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) announced that the virgin coconut oil (VCO) is effective in lessening the severity of the symptoms of patients with Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The effectiveness of the VCO has been observed by the DOST and the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) for 28 days in 57 probable and suspected cases in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

According to DOST Secretary Fortunato Dela Peña, based on the study, the symptoms of the patients with VCO have lessened in the second day and have disappeared after 18 days. However, the DOST clarified that VCO is not a cure to the vaccine but can only be used as supplement to prevent a patient from having severe symptoms.

The DOST will continue to study the effectiveness of VCO in patients in the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) to determine if it works on those who have moderate and severe COVID-19 cases.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health (DOH) reminded that more evidences still need to be gathered to say if it is acceptable as adjunct therapy for COVID-19. – PTV News
