Vegetables posted highest price increases among food items

MANILA — Vegetables posted the highest year-on-year price increases in August among other food and non-alcoholic drink products in the market, latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority have revealed.

Data showed that the average prices of vegetables sold nationwide were 19.2 percent higher in August than the average vegetable prices a year ago.

Price increase in rice was less at 7.1 percent, PSA data showed.

Other food commodities that posted double-digit price increases in August, when there were successive onslaughts of heavy monsoon rains in various parts of the country, were corn, 12.6 percent; fish, 12.4 percent; and non-alcoholic drinks, 11.5 percent.

Prices of sugar, jam, honey, chocolate, and confectionery rose at a slower pace of 9.1 percent; meat, 7.6 percent; bread and cereals, 6.3 percent; fruits, 6.2 percent; oils and fats, 3.8 percent; cereals, flour, cereal preparation, bread, pasta and other bakery products, 3.2 percent; milk, cheese, and eggs, 2.7 percent; and unclassified food products, 4.1 percent. (PNA)
