Waste-to-worth facility soon to rise in Dagupan City

DAGUPAN CITY — A USD 11-million facility that can convert solid wastes into diesel fuel and methane gas will soon be built in Barangay Bonuan Binloc here.

Mayor Belen Fernandez of this city, in an interview on Wednesday, said Sure Global company, which will build the facility for free, is now preparing the engineering documents following the groundbreaking ceremony held on June 18.

The waste-to-worth project was conceptualized in 2014 with the help of Procter and Gamble Philippines, which conducted a feasibility study back then.

“With this project, once and for all, we will be able to address the garbage disposal problem of our city, especially the garbage in our dumpsite,” Fernandez said.

She noted that the diesel fuel to be produced by the facility has the same quality as the one being sold in the market at present.

“Our city will spearhead the use of diesel fuel in our vehicles,” the mayor said.

Some 200 to 300 tricycle operators have agreed to retrofit their tricycles in order to use natural gas or methane gas for free as its enabling fuel, said Fernandez.

“They will not have problem using methane gas, for the facility is expected to operate for 20 years,” she said.

Fernandez expressed that the goal of the said project is for the city to become a model in recycling wastes.

“I do not promise but our goal is towards that. I am just glad that finally, our problem wastes will soon be useful,” she added. (Ahikam Pasion/PNA)
