World-class island in Siargao gets 24/7 power supply

GENERAL LUNA, Siargao Island—Daku Island in General Luna town, Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte will have round-the-clock electric power, following the installation of an underwater cable system.

Costing P36 million and inaugurated on December 27 last year, the underwater cable project linking mainland Siargao to Barangay Daku is already bringing a steady power supply for an initial 40 households on the island.

The 24/7 power supply is a boon for Daku Island, which boasts of white sandy beach and is popular destination for surfing and game-fishing.

Village chieftain Imelda Gaña said the 24-hour electric service is expected to further boost the barangay’s tourism potentials, as well as enhance economic activity and the local fishermen’s productivity.

Gaña recalled that for decades, power supply in the island was available only from 6 p. m. to 10 p.m.—and only to a few households that can afford the costly gasoline-fed generator sets.

Edgardo S. Masongsong, National Electrification Administration chief, said the project is part of their agency’s program to energize tourist islands in the country.

General Luna Mayor Jaime P. Rusillon said power remains crucial for an island that is frequented by thousands of tourists every year.

“The project aims to improve the tourism industry in the area,” Mayor Rusillon said, adding that several investors have already signified their intention to embark on hotel and restaurant businesses on Daku Island.

Daku Island has a total land area of 136 hectares, and can be reached from General Luna in 10 to 15 minutes by motorized boats.

Fishing and farming used to be the main source of livelihood to more than 85 households in the area, while majority people have already ventured into providing tourism services to local and foreign tourists who visit the island. (Roel N. Catoto/PNA)
