Zambo mayor sees fair barangay, SK polls

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar expressed confidence that the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections here will be transparent and fair.

The village and youth council elections are set on May 14, which was declared a holiday to enable the registered voters to exercise their right of suffrage.
Salazar called on other elected officials to adhere to the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) directive to keep the May 14 polls free from political intervention, and ensure honest and peaceful elections.

“The call of the Comelec was clear: politicians must allow objectivity and transparency of elections,” she said on Thursday. “We would like to inspire all candidates with our gratitude for aspiring to serve the community because at the end of the day, you are the first responders as the basic local government unit in the city.”

Some 3,676 aspirants have filed their certificates of candidacy (COC) for the May 14 Barangay and SK elections in this city.

Lawyer Stephen Roy Cañete, first district election officer, said that 2,401 of the 3,676 are vying for the posts of village chairperson and village councilors (Kagawad). The remaining 1,275 are seeking the post of SK chairperson and SK councilors. (Teofilo Garcia, Jr/PNA)
