Zamboanga City marks Rizal’s 157th birthday

ZAMBOANGA CITY–Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar said Zamboangueños should honor the country’s national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, by advocating for the development of the youth to prepare them  into becoming future leaders of the city.

Salazar led local officials on Tuesday for the commemoration of the 157th birth anniversary Dr. Rizal. Her message focused on the youth sector.

Salazar said the city’s young peope should be provided with opportunities to hone their talents and skills “because one day, (one of) you will become the mayor of this city.”

“I believe in the strength, knowledge and intelligence of the youth,” she added, pointing that even Rizal considered the youth as the hope of the nation.

She also urged officials, especially the elected ones, to put the welfare of the people above their personal interest.

The commemoration kicked off at 8 a.m. with a flag raising ceremony at the Plaza Rizal in front of City Hall, followed by floral offering at the foot of the Rizal monument. (Teofilo Garcia, Jr/PNA)
