Pay hike equals better public service: PNP

MANILA — An increase in pay must be reciprocated by better service to the public, Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson Chief Superintendent Dionardo Carlos said Thursday.

This is in wake of President Rodrigo Duterte’s signing of Congress’ Joint Resolution No. 1 last January 1 effectively raising the base pay of all military, police and other uniformed personnel.

“So in the end itong sa increase, suklian natin ng serbisyo sa taong bayan,” Carlos added.

The PNP spokesperson also said that the increase in pay showed that the government valued the sacrifices made by the police and other uniformed services in performance of their duties.

In the same vein, he also urged all police officers to abstain from making unnecessary loans and be more financially literate to improve the lives of their families.

Under the new monthly base pay, which became effective this January, a Police Officer 1 (PO1) will be receiving PHP29,668 monthly compared to PHP14,834, corresponding to a 100-percent increase in base pay and an average increase of 58.70 percent for all other ranks.

PO1 is the lowest rank of entry among enlisted PNP personnel.

The modified base pay schedule for uniformed personnel under the Department of Interior and Local Government shall be implemented within two years.

The increase in base pay will also increase other allowances which are granted as a percentage of base pay (e.g. longevity pay, flying pay, sea duty pay, instructor’s duty pay and higher benefits upon retirement. The hazard pay shall also be fixed at PHP540 per month. (PNA)
