234 HEIs push for tuition hike, says CHED

MANILA — Some 234 private colleges and universities have applied for a tuition fee increase for Academic Year 2018-2019, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) reported Thursday.

“Minus Region 4 (Calabarzon and Mimaropa), there are 234 higher education institutions (HEIs) which have applied for tuition increase, and there is no decision from the commission en banc yet,” CHED Officer-in-Charge Prospero de Vera III said in a press briefing Thursday.

De Vera said 221 private HEIs have also submitted proposals to increase other school fees.

He said both figures are small compared to the total number of private HEIs, except for those in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, which is close to 1,700.

“This number may go down depending on the decision of the commission en banc next week. After our meeting, we will issue the list of schools with approved tuition increase,” he said.

At the regional level, de Vera reported that 36 applications for tuition hike were denied due to the submission of incomplete documents and late filing of application.

On the other hand, three HEIs decreased their fees this year – Philippine Women’s University of Davao, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, and De La Salle-College of St. Benilde. (Ma. Teresa Montemayor/PNA)
