4.6K passengers stranded due to ‘Ompong’

MANILA — With Typhoon Ompong battering a large part of the country after making landfall early Saturday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has announced that 4,688 passengers were reportedly stranded in various ports in eight regions, including Metro Manila.

In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC said the ports in Regions 3 (Central Luzon), 4-A (Calabarzon), 4-B (Mimaropa), 5 (Bicol), 6 (Western Visayas), 7 (Central Visayas), 8 (Eastern Visayas), and the National Capital Region were reported to have stranded passengers and ships.

The disaster council report added that 875 rolling cargoes, 53 ships, and 59 motorized bancas were stranded.

Also, a total of 14 international and 22 domestic flights were cancelled on Friday due to inclement weather.

In its update, NDRRMC spokesperson Edgar Posadas said the number of individuals affected by the weather disturbance has dropped to 4.24 million or significantly lower than the 5.2 million reported in its Friday morning briefing.

Based on NDRRMC’s update at 6 p.m. Friday, the change in the statistics can be attributed to the changing tracks of the typhoon, Posadas added. ( Priam Nepomuceno/PNA)
