Palace: DOE ready to address power shortage

By EJ Roque/Philippine News Agency

MANILA — Malacañang on Wednesday expressed optimism that the Department of Energy (DOE) is ready to respond to any power crisis that the country may face.

“I’m sure the Energy department will have responses to whatever crisis we will have,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a briefing.

Panelo made the comment after the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines placed the Luzon grid on red alert on Wednesday.

The Luzon power grid was placed under red alert for the first time this year due to thinning reserves resulting from outage of several power plants.

The DOE said it does not expect any power interruption as there are 174.6 megawatts available under the Interruptible Load Program (ILP) for the Manila Electric Co. franchise area.

The DOE, in an advisory, said the red alert status was from 10:01 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1:01 p.m. to 4 p.m.

A yellow alert was also raised from 9:01 a.m. to 10 a.m., 11:01 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 4:01 p.m. to 5 p.m.

A red alert is a system condition where there are zero ancillary services or a generation deficiency exists while a yellow alert means low power reserves.
