Work accident reporting to be piloted in W. Visayas

ILOILO CITY — A reporting system that aims to get accurate information about accidents in workplaces will be launched in Western Visayas on October 24 in Bacolod City.

“EC Ulat.Me” is a work accident reporting system, said Stephen Barredo, regional officer of the Employees Compensation Commission (ECC), an attached agency of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Tuesday.

Barredo explained that employers are supposed to report accidents happening in their offices but the compliance is not high and there is no data available in the region.

“ECC and DOLE innovated a system that not only employers could participate in the reporting but also employees, workers, the public and someone who see the accidents happen,” he said.

The data will also serve as basis for the ECC to “give appropriate benefits and assistance automatically.”

He added that a lot of workers have no idea of their benefits because ECC is not informed of accidents.
The reporting can be done trough text messaging and through the webpage.

ECC earlier implemented “Iwas Aksidente Patrol” but the new system is more accessible and sustainable, he said.

The launching will be held simultaneous with the regional advocacy seminar to be attended by officials of DOLE. It will gather workers federations and groups where among those to be discussed are the process on how to avail of ECC benefits and the new reporting system.

The social protection agency of DOLE currently has almost PHP58 billion assets reserved for workers compensation benefits.

Last year, ECC released around PHP1 billion worth of 249 claims nationwide as a result of its intensified information campaign. (PNA)
