Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary Martin Dino said that several barangay heads, especially in Metro Manila, could face suspension following their failure to get rid of road obstructions, illegal vending and parking in their respective jurisdictions within the 60-day period prescribed by Pres. Rodrigo Duterte. In the City of Manila, he added, there are almost a hundred barangay chiefs who may face sanctions. Dino pointed out that the mayor of a city issues certificates to barangay captains compliant with the DILG directive. Barangay captains are duty-bound to maintain order. If the city mayors fail to comply, DILG Secretary Eduardo Año may recommend their suspension to the President. USec. Diño explained that the department will be sending out show cause orders to non-compliant mayors and barangay captains. Should their response be unsatisfactory, the Ombudsman shall act on their cases.
