DOJ investigates DENR undersecretary, 7 others on Canadian waste importation

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has started its initial investigation on the complaint filed by the National Bureau of Investigation – Environment Crime Division (NBI-ECD) against Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Undersecretary Juan Miguel Cuna and seven others.

The former DENR Environment Management Bureau Director, Usec. Cuna, along with his staff, Irvin Cadavona, Geri Geronimo Sanez, Renato Cruz, and Bureau of Customs (BOC) personnel, Benjamin Perez Jr., Eufracio Ednaco, Matilda Bacongan, and Jose Saromo have been accused for their involvement in the importation of more than one hundred container vans storing wastes from Canada in 2013 to 2014.

The said containers have been returned to Canada last year on Pres. Rodrigo Duterte’s behest.
