PHIVOLCS raises Masbate earthquake to Magnitude 6.6

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has raised to Magnitude 6.6 the earthquake felt in Masbate Tuesday morning.

The intensity 7 quake in Cataingan, Masbate is a tectonic earthquake. The PHIVOLCS has also recorded intensity 5 in nearby areas and Samar, and intensity 4 in parts of Sorsogon, Albay, Quezon, Leyte, and Negros Occidental.

According to the institute, the earthquake was caused by the moving of the Philippine Fault Zone-Masbate Segment. The PHIVOLCS have recorded more than 20 aftershocks but only 1 aftershock has been felt. No tsunami is expected to occur.

One casualty and more than 20 are injured have been recorded in the initial report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Authorities are conducting an assessment on the damage caused by the quake. – Report from Patrick de Jesus
