DFA’s Statement on the Explosion in Abu Dhabi

PASAY CITY 31 August 2020 — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), through the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi, confirms reports of an explosion at a building near Airport Road in Abu Dhabi at around 10 in the morning of 31 August 2020. The Abu Dhabi authorities quickly arrived at the scene to address the situation and to ensure everyone’s safety.

The Embassy is monitoring developments and will extend every possible assistance. According to Ambassador Quintana, there are Embassy personnel on site checking the area. There are also Embassy personnel coordinating with the police. Initial information reaching the Embassy is that there may be Filipinos working at the affected establishments but company management is not able to confirm as of this time.

The latest pronouncement from UAE authorities is that there are two victims who lost their lives – one was near the site of the incident, while the second was a passer-by who was hit by debris. No details yet were given as to their nationalities or identities.

The Embassy joins the Filipino community in UAE in hoping that there would be no further fatalities and that others involved in the incident would have no serious injuries. The Embassy is on the alert and ready to extend assistance.
