Flooding, landslides hit Catanduanes due to TY Ulysses

Aside from heavy flooding, the Province of Catanduanes is also dealing with the impact of landslides due to Typhoon Ulysses.

At least four landslides including giant rock slides occurred from Virac to Bagamonoc, that isolated some areas. There were to two incidents in San Miguel, a massive one in Viga, and another in Bagamanoc.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has immediately conducted clearing operations.

Meanwhile, flashfloods triggered by continuous downpour in Barangay Hinipaan in Bagamonoc affected 600 families. Hinipaan chief Romel Bonillo said the flooding lasted for almost half an hour.

“Bandang alas onse ng umaga nang biglang ‘yung tubig umalpas dito sa dike. Napakabilis ng pangyayari, hindi man nga kami nakapag-ano, nakapag-evacuate (It was around 11:00 a.m. when the water overflowed from the dike. It happened so fast that we were not able to evacuate),” Banillo recounted.

The Catanduanes local government reported that Typhoon Ulysses’ aftermath affected Pandan, Panganiban, Viga, Caramoran, and Gigmoto. Around 48,000 individuals ran for shelter to their neighbors’ houses, while 7,000 were brought to evacuation facilities.

Authorities said that no casualties were recorded.

Due to lack of supplies, the distribution of relief goods in Virac was suspended today, affecting barangays Calatagan Proper, Calatagan Tibang, SIV, San Vicente, Ibong Sapa, Capilihan, Palnab del Norte, Palnab del Sur, and Rawis. – Report from Ryan Lesigues
