Duterte certifies urgency of bills taxing POGOs, OFW department creation

Malacañang announced today (May 31) that President Rodrigo Duterte certified as urgent two bills which aim to impose taxes on Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGOs) and establish a migrant workers and overseas Filipinos’ department.

Senate Bill No. 2232, also known as “An Act Taxing Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations, Amending for the Purpose Sections 22, 25, 27, 28 and Adding a New Section 125-A of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997, As Amended, and For Other Purposes,” is expected to raise revenues and monitoring on the industry.

“We hope that through this measure we would not only generate the much needed revenues in the country but also place the industry under stricter government oversight,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said.

Meanwhile, Senate Bill No. 2234 or “An Act Creating the Department of Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos” will further empower overseas Filipinos and protect their rights.

Roque said this will “provide a more efficient, whole-of-government approach to protect the rights and promote the welfare and interest of overseas Filipinos.” (OPS) AG-rir
