PNP pauses implementation of BMI requirement for promotion

The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced Tuesday (July 13) that it has suspended the implementation of using body mass index (BMI) as a requirement for police promotion.

PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said in a statement that he has already signed the recommendation to pause PNP Memorandum Circular 2020-029 implementation amid the pandemic.

He said among the factors behind the decision is the workload balance of their personnel. He added that the decision is only temporary, and might change when the situation returns to normalcy.

“Nasa panahon tayo ng pandemya kung saan nangangailangan ng malasakit at pang-unawa sa aming mga tauhan, lalo na ang libu-libo naming personnel na naatasang magpatupad ng minimum public health safety protocol 24 oras,” he said.

Meanwhile, the PNP said it will look into the status of reported “undelivered” equipment and supplies for the Special Action Force (SAF), after state auditors flagged billions-worth of unfinished contracts in the agency and in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“I have directed the leadership of the SAF to determine and immediately report to me why some of these procurement contracts have not materialized. I have also tasked the SAF to report the current status of the contracts,” Eleazar said. -rir
