Boxer Carlo Paalam eliminated Uzbekistani opponent Shakhobidin Zoirov in the men’s flyweight quarterfinals at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday (Aug. 3) morning.
Paalam is now assured of at least a bronze medal following his victory over his opponent via a split decision. He has now secured a spot in the semifinals after this win.
The Filipino boxer dominated his Uzbekistani opponent in round one to capture the vote of the judges. The fight was stopped at the 1:40 mark of round two after Zoirov sustained a cut.Â
Based on the scorecards, four judges favored Paalam while one decided that the fight was a draw.Â
Paalam will face Ryomei Tanaka of Japan in the semifinals on Aug. 5.
