Speaker Lord Allan Velasco congratulates PH delegation to 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Our warmest congratulations and deepest gratitude to the entire Philippine delegation on reaching multiple milestones in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, including the country’s first gold medal after 97 years of Olympic competition.

With one gold from Hidilyn Diaz, two silver medals from Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam, and one bronze from Eumir Marcial, this edition’s Philippine team is undoubtedly the most successful delegation since the country started competing in the Olympics in 1924.

This four-medal haul for the Philippines eclipsed its previous best Olympic performance in the 1932 Los Angeles Games, where three Filipino athletes won medals for the country. The Philippines also has just been hailed as Southeast Asia’s best performing country in the 2020 Tokyo Games, ending Thailand’s reign in the past four Olympics.

This is just the beginning as there is a lot more to come from our courageous and inspiring national athletes. Filipinos are forever grateful to all 19 athletes, their coaches and sports officials for the joy, pride and glory they brought to the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Mabuhay ang mga magigiting na atletang Pinoy! -rir
