DOH: Let COVID-19 patients vote virtually

The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday (Sept. 17) urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to devise alternative voting systems for COVID-19 patients to participate in the 2022 national and local elections.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire suggested in a DOH media forum that COVID-19 patients be allowed to vote digitally.

“Sana po ‘yung Comelec will have an alternative way of having these elections for those having these positive patients. Baka pwede naman pong virtual na lang, digital through SMS,” Vergeire said.

In response, Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said that any alternative means of voting is not being considered for 2022 polls.

“As to the possibility of alternative means of voting, unfortunately these are not authorized by law and will not be employed on May 9, 2022,” Jimenez said.

According to Comelec, isolation polling places (IPPs) will be designated, which will cater to individuals who will exhibit COVID-19 symptoms at the voting precincts.

However, the Health department warned the poll body that IPPs could cause further transmission of the virus. – Report from Ryan Lesigues / CF – jlo
