MANILA – National Master (NM) Ivan Travis Cu of San Juan City ruled the just concluded GM Eugene Torre Cup dubbed as Search for Kid Grandmaster Semi-Finals Online Chess Championship held Tuesday, Nov. 2, on the Lichess.org Platform.
The 12-year old Cu, a Grade 7 pupil of Xavier School in San Juan City, came out on top with 6 points on account of six wins and one loss in seven outings in the 10-minute plus 5-second increment time control format that saw 86 young woodpushers participate.
Cu scored victories over Allie Jean Ong in the first round, Maria Kristine Lavandero in the second round, Richard Haiden Alarma in the third round, Yosef Immanuel Morada in the fourth round, Oshrie Jhames Reyes in the fifth round, and Jian Carlo Rivera in the sixth and penultimate round.
He lost to Mark Noah Venatayen in the seventh and final round.
Cu got his elusive National Master (NM) title after winning the under 12 National Age Group Hybrid Chess Championships and a strong runner-up finish in the National Youth & Schools Hybrid Chess Championship Grand Finals U-13 Boys Category last June 2021. (PR) – bny
