PNP discourages use of firecrackers as PH readies for New Year

By Alec Go

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has discouraged the public from using firecrackers for the New Year revelries for a safer and peaceful celebration.

In the Dec. 28 Laging Handa briefing, PNP Spokesperson Col. Roderick Augustus Alba said the regulated fireworks use is a whole-of-government approach that must be supported by all stakeholders.

“They should limit dito sa firecracker zones duly designated by the local government units, at kung ano iyong mga bawal ay talagang huwag po nilang ipilit i-distribute or ibenta,” he said.

“It will be subjected for confiscation even to the arrest ng mga possessor ng mga ilegal na firecrackers and pyrotechnics,” he added.

The PNP has been coordinating with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) for the designation of firecracker zones to ensure security.

The official said they are looking into criminality concerns, the observance of minimum public health standards, and the prevention of fire incidents “during the selling and distribution” of firecrackers.

The Department of Health (DOH) reported that there have been 23 fireworks-related injuries as of Dec. 27, which is 92% higher than last year’s figures.

No unnecessary firearm use

While there is no specific guideline yet on the sealing of PNP personnel’s firearms, Alba said the PNP leadership is “very strict” in reminding all cops not to use guns outside their duty to “serve and protect.”

“This also include sa reminders sa lahat ng mga gun owners na to be responsible, na gagamitin iyong firearm only to protect yourself, your loved ones or stranger,” he said.

“Never pong gamitin ito for illegal discharge na maka-hurt o malagay sa alanganin iyong security and safety ng ating mga kababayan,” he added.

Meanwhile, families and individuals leaving their homes during the holiday season were advised to avoid real-time sharing of their location which could give “opportunity or motive” for possible robbers. -rir
