Typhoon-hit Limasawa residents get tarps for temporary roofing

TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) sent 1,572 tarpaulin sheets to the island town of Limasawa in Southern Leyte as temporary shelter for families whose houses were damaged by Typhoon Odette.

These tarpaulin sheets will be used by families while waiting for the availability of permanent roofing materials on the island, said DPWH Southern Leyte district engineering office chief Manolo Rojas on Thursday (Jan. 27).

These sheets, transported to Limasawa town on Wednesday (Jan. 26), have benefitted 1,572 households in the villages of Cabulihan, Lugsongan, Magallanes, San Agustin, San Bernardo, and Triana in Limasawa town.

“I hope that with these tarps distributed, residents will be able to build temporary shelters until such time that they can already construct sturdier houses,” Rojas said in a phone interview.

Limasawa town with about 6,000 residents is one of the hardest-hit areas by Typhoon Odette when it crossed Caraga and Eastern Visayas regions on Dec. 16, 2021.

Since Dec. 17, 2021, the DPWH has been engaged in clearing operations and road restoration in the province after “Odette” toppled several trees, including those planted on roadsides. (PNA)   -ag
