PRRD on Women’s Day: ‘ We can do more’ for women

President Rodrigo Duterte lauded the country’s “distinction as a shining beacon of gender equality and women empowerment” as the world celebrated Women’s Day on Tuesday, March 8.

In his International Women’s Day message, Duterte mentioned the role of women in various sectors and nation-building.

“Be it in politics, business, academy, and local communities, most especially in our homes, women have occupied and continue to occupy positions of power and influence in our society,” he said.

“This emphasizes, not only our values as a people but also the importance we put on women as vital partners in nation-building,” he added.

While noting the “growing consciousness on equality” and the empowerment of women “is already an impressive feat,” Duterte said the nation “can do more.”

“As we gain more access to education, information, and innovation, more women will have the chance to meaningfully participate in many aspects of human development and change the mindsets that continue to put women and other gender expressions at a disadvantage,” he said.

The Chief Executive called on the nation in building the Philippines “where no one is left behind and everyone has the capacity to succeed.”

In his first Palace briefing on Tuesday, acting presidential spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar echoed the President’s message, saying that they recognize the role of women in society.

“Kinikilala natin ang napakahalagang ng ating mga kababaihan hindi lamang sa ating mga tahanan kung hindi pati na rin ang kanilang kontribusyon sa ating lipunan,” he said.

“Kaya naman sa unang taon pa lamang ng Duterte administration, isa sa unang polisiyang kaniyang itinaguyod ay ang karapatan ng kababaihan,” he added. AG – bny
