President Rodrigo Duterte commended athletes who represented the Philippines in the recently concluded Southeast Asian (SEA) Games held in Hanoi, Vietnam, saying that they did “a good job.”

In his speech Tuesday during the recognition of Filipino SEA Games medalists in Malacañang, Duterte expressed happiness over the results of the biennial meet and stressed that it is not all about winning.

“It is not everyday that I get to mingle with the Philippine team, so let me take this chance to express my appreciation for all the medalists and all athletes for record-breaking feats,” he said.

“I salute you for showcasing our talents and giving your best despite the limitations in your training due to COVID-19 pandemic,” he added.

The President also conferred the Order of Lapu-Lapu with the Rank of Kamagi to the medalists and handed the incentives to the athletes.

“I deeply thank you for representing the country with resiliency, excellence, and sportsmanship, and for bringing pride and honor to the Filipino people amidst the challenges you had to face in these uncertain times,” he said.

As more Filipino players show excellent performances in international sports competitions, the outgoing President also encouraged the country’s youth to participate in sports and other productive activities “that will teach them” distinct Filipino values, and to “afford the country’s distinction as among the most competitive athletes in the global community.”

He also thanked the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and other Philippine team members for their “unwavering support,” and urged the PSC to keep its assistance to motivate the country’s athletes.

“Let us all be inspired by this era of new hope and work as one team for a more progressive and inclusive Philippines,” he said. -ag
