The Philippines is expected to become a “moderately prosperous” country by 2040, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said during the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

During his speech, Marcos cited the “steady investment” in food security, public health, education, and social services.

“Despite the challenges of the pandemic and the global economic upheavals, we remain on track to reach upper middle-income status by next year,” Marcos said.

“Yet no nation stands alone. The achievement of our national ambition requires a global environment that creates conditions that allow all nations, including ours, to thrive in peace,” he added.

Marcos also recognized the importance of the United Nations to allow the country “to continue to work” and vowed that his administration is “determined to be part of the solution.”

Marcos also lauded Filipino health workers all over the world for being “at the frontlines in many countries,” helping to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

“We have always been an optimistic and courageous nation. Despite the enormity of these challenges, we believe that solutions are within our collective grasp,” he added.
